Freya
Freya is a beautiful, Quarter Horse/Percheron cross mare born in 2011. She arrived in September, 2024, when her owner was no longer able to care for the serious abscess and subsequent surgery she'd had on her one front foot. Freya was diagnosed with EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome) in 2022. She developed a very bad abscess in 2023 that did not resolve on it's own. In December, 2023, in consultation with his vet and farrier, her owner had a drastic resection of her hoof done, with a plate added across the front of her hoof, and corrective shoeing. Unfortunately, by September of 2024, she still hadn't completely healed from the previous intervention and was again abscessing and lame, at which time she came to Bear Valley. We immediately removed the shoe and plate and found that the plate has been attached with regular (not surgical grade or even stainless steel) screws, which was likely the source that was introducing new infection into her hoof. As of November, 2024, she is doing much better and her lameness is almost complete resolved, she is not longer on pain medication, and we are hopeful, but her prognosis is still guarded. We are waiting to see if she will have healthy new hoof growth coming in at her coronet at the abscess site.
