Orphan foal 'Filly'

In mid June, 2015, we were contacted by a concerned young couple who had found an orphan foal running alongside the highway  west of Calgary a week or two before.  They were attempting to care for her as best they could but felt they weren't doing the best for the foal and asked us to take her on.  We estimated at that time that Filly was only about 3 weeks old.  She was VERY hungry but full of spunk!

After settling her in for a couple of days we decided to introduce Filly to Pet, our oldest resident horse at 39 years of age.  Pet had always expressed a lot of interest and motherly care toward other foals that we'd had, so we thought it would be a good fit for both Filly and Pet, giving Pet the foal she'd always wanted and giving Filly some much needed horse interaction and motherly love.  We were so very pleased when Pet immediately adopted Filly as her own, even letting her 'nurse'.   It was a match made in heaven.

Filly and Pet were together until late April, 2016, at which time we had to make the very difficult decision to have Pet put to sleep after she'd injured her foot and her health began to deteriorate.    Pet was just 12 days short of her 40th birthday and will forever be missed.  She was a true matriarch of the Rescue.  Thankfully Filly adjusted quickly to the loss of Pet and soon joined other youngsters her own age.  She is now part of the main herd and will be a permanent resident of the Rescue and a heartfelt reminder of Pet and her legacy.
