We Need Your Help! – The Month of May Hit Us Hard
Hey friends — this is Kathy from Bear Valley Horse Rescue. I don’t usually reach out like this, but May has been a brutal month financially, and we could really use a hand.
Between unexpected medical cases, equipment repairs, and regular operational costs, we’ve had to cover $28,200 in critical expenses just this month — and that’s before feed.
Here’s what we’ve been facing:
- $11,300 in vet bills — including treatments for Waylon, our little cryptorchid mini, and Nutmeg, our sweet orphan colt. Each of them needed around $2,000 of specialized care.
- $3,500 for diesel to keep everything running
- $3,600 for skidsteer repairs (we can’t do much without it)
- $3,500 for our farrier (Pat is here this week) – keeping our herd’s hooves healthy
- $2,500 for our tipping table farrier who was here earlier in May (essential for the not-foot-broke horses)
- $2,000 for vehicle/farm insurance
- $1,800 for new tires for the dually – no skipping this with the terrain we cover
We do everything we can to stretch every dollar, but this month has pushed us to the limit.
If you’re able to chip in — even a small amount — it would mean the world to us and to the horses we care for. Every donation helps keep the lights on, the tanks full, and our animals healthy and safe.

Where do your donations go?
Here are some examples of our expenses for 2023: Hay - $ 157,920 Feed - $ 70,569 Vet - $ 79,213 Farrier - $ 24,853 Along with all the other costs involved in running the Rescue, like fencing, hauling, repairs and maintenance, it sure adds up, but the horses deserve the best care possible. We can only do this with your support! |
Recent Intakes:
Due to the large number of surrender requests we get and the influx of horses we are helping, we sometimes have to limit intakes (as much as we can). If you are considering adopting or fostering, now is the time! If you can donate to help the horses in our care it is very much appreciated. If you are struggling and have to surrender your horse you can still reach out to us as we will do our best to help, or to network to provide assistance.

Hay for the horses is our single largest expense.
If you have good quality horse hay to donate, please contact us and we can arrange to have it picked up. We use hay throughout the year as we have a number of horses that cannot go out on pasture in the summer. Tax receipts can be issued for all hay donations. Help us put a dent in our biggest expense! |
Help us care for the senior horses.
We have many older and special needs horses that need custom feeding & daily medication (in 2022, over 80 of our horses are aged 20 years or more, of which at least 10 are aged 30 or more!). You can donate feed for the horses through our feed supplier, Country Junction Feeds, arrange it through another supplier, or bring it to us directly. We appreciate all donations and can issue charitable tax receipts! |
For info on adopting and to see the horses currently residing at the Rescue, look under 'The Animals' tab. Wondering what you can do to help the horses or get involved? Look under the 'How To Help' tab for more information. One of the best ways to help is though a monthly sponsorship of one of the horses or other animals at the Rescue. |
